In 1986, a group of County Attorneys from urban and rural counties saw a need to form an organization that would provide assistance to County Attorneys. The legal issues which a County Attorney in Tennessee faced and the relationship he or she had with elected officials were similar throughout the state. To address this need, the group formed the Tennessee County Attorneys Association (TCAA).

Even prior to the now required continuing legal education, the TCAA began offering seminars on issues that faced all County Attorneys such as civil rights litigation, educational issues, jail overcrowding, ADA issues, employment litigation, public finance, relationships with elected officials, ethical issues unique to County Attorneys and many other topics. The TCAA sought to provide seminars on topics that were timely to Tennessee County Attorneys, not readily available and at a cost that recognized that most County Attorneys had to pay such costs themselves. TCAA continues to follow that philosophy.

A network relationship was created so that a County Attorney could have the benefit of research and experience of other County Attorneys throughout the state, thereby sharing legal experience among those lawyers who practice in this field. Realizing that many County Attorneys must earn their living in private practice, the TCAA continues to be a major resource for these dedicated public servants. TCAA has been an essential asset to my practice and it can be to yours.

Through the past twenty-five years, TCAA members have made new and lasting friendships with attorneys throughout the state. We hold our annual meeting in each Grand Division on a rotating basis and charge a nominal registration fee which includes continuing legal education credits. The continuing legal education program includes three hours of ethics credits to fully satisfy the annual requirement. The TCAA Board is representative of our membership in that the directors include attorneys from large and small counties and from each Grand Division.

The TCAA Board of Directors voted to change the fiscal year to July 1 through June 30 at the April 2008 meeting in Chattanooga. As president, I urge you to renew your membership in the TCAA or, if you are not presently a member, to join us. I hope you will make plans to attend our SILVER ANNIVERSARY annual meeting in Chattanooga in late April or early May, 2012. The exact dates and host hotel will be announced after our December Board meeting. We look forward to seeing you in Chattanooga.
